Reading
Learning to read well is a HUGE part of second grade. My goal is to inspire a love of reading in all of my students. In order to do that, my students must become independent readers who read with confidence and understanding.
Reader's Workshop
A large part of every morning is spent in Reader's Workshop. The first part of the workshop is spent in a Shared Reading lesson where I model the use of reading strategies for my students using big books and other shared reading materials. The majority of the workshop is spent in small groups or working independently. While I work with individual students or reading groups, the other students are busy practicing their reading by reading independently or working with other students in our Listening Center, Big Book Center, or reading with a buddy. During reading groups, students work with me in a small group on books at their level to practice using the various reading and comprehension strategies taught during the shared reading lessons.
Accelerated Reading
Accelerated Reading is a school-wide reading intervention program in which students read books at their level, and then take quizzes on the computer to test their reading comprehension of the books they read. Students earn points for passing the quizzes which they can redeem for prizes at the end of each marking period. Ask your child how many points they have earned!
Lexia
Lexia is a computer based phonics intervention program which many of our students will be using during Reader's Workshop.
Weekly Home Reading assignments
You should be seeing a zip-lock bag in your child’s backpack at the beginning of each week containing several books, a book review sheet inside each book, and a Home Reading Log for you to sign. This is a very important part of your child's homework. Please make sure that your child is completing their Home Reading assignments and that you are signing the Home Reading Log for each book that he
or she reads. .
Fifth Grade Reading Buddies
Each second grade student will be paired with a fifth grade student from Ms. Pacelli's class. Every Friday, the reading buddies get together to read and discuss books together. The fifth grade students have been great role models for our second graders!
